History was made on Saturday, October 25, 2025, as Professor Chinedum Peace Babalola, a distinguished scholar, pharmacist, and researcher, joined the group of pharmacists inducted as Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMedSc) — a recognition that further cements her legacy as one of Africa’s most accomplished scientists.

The induction ceremony, held during the 5th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Academy of Medical Sciences at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos, brought together top medical scientists, researchers, and policymakers to honour newly elected Fellows of the Academy for their exceptional contributions to advancing health and biomedical sciences in Nigeria.

Prof. Babalola was inducted alongside another accomplished pharmacist, Prof. Chukwuemeka S. Nwosu, a PhD holder in Immunopharmacology, whose work in immune-based drug research has equally contributed to improving healthcare delivery and medical innovation in Nigeria.

A respected don at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Babalola has blazed remarkable trails in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacogenetics, and pharmaceutical quality assurance — disciplines in which her research has transformed drug therapy, clinical outcomes, and public health policy across Africa. Her pioneering studies on antimalarials, antibiotics, and pharmacogenetics in Nigerians, sickle cell patients, and people living with HIV have provided vital insights for precision medicine and informed rational drug use.

Through the Centre for Drug Discovery, Development and Production (CDDDP), which she founded, Prof. Babalola has led groundbreaking work in drug innovation, regulatory science, mentorship, and capacity building, empowering a generation of scientists and pharmacists to pursue excellence in healthcare research.

Speaking during the ceremony, several dignitaries praised Prof. Babalola’s extraordinary impact on science, describing her as a woman of intellect, integrity, and immense influence whose work continues to bridge the gap between research and practice.

Her induction, alongside Prof. Nwosu, underscores the growing recognition of the pharmacy profession within the nation’s leading scientific bodies and highlights the vital role of pharmaceutical sciences in advancing healthcare delivery and biomedical innovation.

Prof. Babalola’s career continues to stand as a beacon of innovation, leadership, and dedication — inspiring a new generation of researchers to push the frontiers of medical and pharmaceutical discovery.
