Mr. Fatai Adegoke, a teacher at Soun High School in Ogbomoso in Oyo State, was beaten to death by his students after he tried to stop them from gambling during school hours.

According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Adegoke caught some students gambling in the classroom and scolded them.

The students reportedly turned on him and beat him severely, breaking his limbs. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

In a joint statement, a group of concerned teachers described the attack as shocking and unacceptable.

“With deep pain, we mourn the death of Mr. Fatai Adegoke, a committed teacher who lost his life while enforcing discipline. This attack is not just on one person, but on the entire teaching profession,” the statement read.

The group called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and the police to ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted. They also urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s behaviour

Educators blamed the tragedy on declining morals in schools and homes and asked the government to improve safety and discipline in schools.

However, efforts to contact the Oyo State Police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, for comments were unsuccessful. Reports say the students involved have gone into hiding, causing anger among residents.

The incident has renewed calls for better protection of teachers and stricter measures to make schools safe places for learning.
