Charly Boy has intervened in the online dispute between singers Wizkid and Seun Kuti, the son of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.
The conflict was ignited by Wizkid’s declaration of being greater than Fela during a clash with Seun.
Seun, who responded with a sarcastic post calling Wizkid a “short man,” had earlier attacked the singer’s fanbase. He had accused them of disrespecting his father’s legacy by comparing Wizkid to Fela.
In a post shared on his X handle on Wednesday, Charly Boy dismissed the comparison as unnecessary.
The 75-year-old maverick acknowledged both artistes’ monumental success but argued their impacts and purposes in music are fundamentally different.
The singer and activist elaborated that Wizkid’s music, like his global hit ‘Made in Lagos,’ is crafted to entertain and evoke joy, while Fela’s work was rooted in social consciousness, designed to provoke thought and confront societal ills.
“Wizkid dey sing for crowd, stadium full, light dey flash, money dey talk, awards dey stack, world dey shout: Starboy! Fela no need spotlight, him own be fire for chest, kalakuta be him stage. Truth be hin microphone,” he wrote.
“One dey rule charts, one dey rule conscience. One dey give sweet escape, one dey give hard reality.”
Addressing the contentious question of who is bigger, Charly Boy concluded that the answer is subjective and depends on what a listener values most.
According to him, if measured by “fame and cruise,” Wizkid leads. If judged by “fight and freedom,” Fela is unparalleled.
“Different time, different battle, different kind of greatness. No be who big pass… Na who touch your soul pass. πΆπ₯,” he wrote.
