The United Kingdom has announced extensive security measures, including road closures and airspace restrictions, ahead of the upcoming state visit of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Tinubu is expected to arrive in the UK with the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, on Wednesday, March 18, for a state visit hosted by King Charles III. The visit will begin with a reception at Windsor Castle.

In a statement published on its website, Thames Valley Police said it is working closely with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household and other security partners to ensure the event proceeds safely.

According to the police, existing airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle will be extended on March 18, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., as part of the broader security arrangements for the visit.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of the force’s Joint Operations Unit said the restrictions form part of a comprehensive security operation.

“The air restrictions are just one part of our robust security operation for the state visit of Nigerian President Tinubu next week, with many measures you will see and others you will not,” Hall said.

He noted that the force has extensive experience policing royal events in Windsor and that significant planning has gone into preparations for the visit.

Hall warned that authorities would strictly enforce the airspace restrictions, stressing that any violation would be treated as a criminal offence under the **Air Navigation Order** and could result in arrest.

The police also confirmed that officers with specialist capabilities—including search teams, the Mounted Section, road policing units and armed officers—will be deployed across Windsor. Additional neighbourhood policing teams and **Project Servator** resources will also be present to engage with the public.

Authorities will further rely on Windsor’s extensive closed-circuit television network, hostile vehicle mitigation barriers and other undisclosed security measures to secure the area.

Hall urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support the security operation by reporting suspicious activities via the police helpline or emergency services where necessary.

Road closures and parking restrictions are expected to take effect from Tuesday, March 17, with possible temporary disruptions around Windsor during the visit.

Thames Valley Police added that it is working with the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services to enforce the flight restrictions. Individuals with legitimate reasons to operate drones during the restricted period have been asked to submit requests to the police for approval.
