President Donald Trump said he believes Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is “probably alive” but may have been injured during recent military operations.

In an interview with Fox News Radio host Brian Kilmeade, Trump said, “I think he probably is. I think he’s damaged, but I think he’s probably alive in some form.”

Khamenei has not made any public appearances since his appointment earlier this week, following the reported death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian authorities have also not released updated images of the new leader.

Reports citing Iranian sources claim that Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded in a Feb. 28 airstrike that reportedly targeted his father and wife. Some accounts have alleged he is in a coma and may have suffered severe injuries, including extensive internal trauma and possible limb loss. Other sources, however, have disputed those claims, saying he sustained only minor injuries such as a fractured foot, facial bruising, and lacerations during the initial wave of strikes.

In his first public statement as supreme leader, Khamenei reportedly vowed to close the Strait of Hormuz and pledged retaliation for his father’s death and for others killed in the conflict. The statement was read on Iranian state television while an image of him was displayed on screen.

Responding to the remarks, Trump said during the broadcast, “They’ve been doing a lot of talking, so he’s going to have to put up.” He added that U.S. forces were conducting extensive strikes, claiming significant damage to missile systems, drones, and manufacturing facilities.

“We’re hitting them harder than anybody’s been hit since World War II,” Trump said.

The situation remains fluid, and independent confirmation of the competing reports about Khamenei’s condition has not been provided.
