In a bid to strengthen religious tolerance between Christians and Muslims, some Christian residents in Jos have been sharing food with their Muslim counterparts across Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas during Ramadan.
The philanthropists, who have sustained this gesture since the commencement of the Ramadan fast, say they prepare meals and distribute them to Muslim faithful in various communities and mosques within the area to break their fast.
They stressed that humanity should come before religion, urging Nigerians to embrace one another regardless of ethnic or religious differences.
Alexander Pious, omey of the donors, said “ I believe before I became a Christian, I was a human being. Before my brother became a Muslim, he was a human being. So, humanity comes first and I feel it is better to share love with one another irrespective of our differences, hence the need to contribute for the betterment of humanity.”
A benefactor, Kehinde Ronke, noted that “ I was moved by what my brother, Alex do and believe that I should also help others without minding their background. One thing in life, never can tell who will help you tomorrow in your time of need.”
Some members of the Muslim community have commended the initiative, describing it as impactful, particularly for the less privileged.
Jafaru Ango, a member of the community, described the development as a good gesture.
“I am happy with what they are doing. They share food with Muslims at different mosques. They cook good meals and give freely without discrimination. Everyone appreciates this gesture.”
Musa Ibrahim, another member of the Muslim community, said “This gesture is a welcome development. We are all happy about it. It shows that our religious differences cannot divide us. The crises in Jos are often caused by bad elements, not genuine Christians or Muslims. We appreciate this act of kindness.”
Plateau State has experienced recurring ethno-religious tensions in recent years.
However, both donors and beneficiaries believe that acts like this can help foster peace, unity, and mutual respect among diverse communities.
