Iran has warned it will completely shut the strategic Strait of Hormuz if the United States carries out threats to bomb its power plants, heightening tensions in the region.

The warning follows remarks by US President Donald Trump, who on Saturday said Washington would “hit and obliterate” Iranian power facilities—“starting with the biggest one first”—if the vital shipping route was not fully reopened to global traffic within 48 hours.

The ultimatum came just a day after Trump indicated he was considering scaling down military operations after nearly three weeks of conflict, even as additional US troops were deployed to the Middle East.

In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement warning that Iran would “completely shut” the Strait of Hormuz if the US followed through on its threats. The group also cautioned that companies with US ties could be “completely destroyed” if Iranian energy infrastructure is targeted.

The IRGC further warned that power plants in regional countries hosting US military bases could be considered legitimate targets.

On Sunday, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said the waterway remained open to all nations except those that “violate our soil.”

Similarly, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran had only imposed restrictions on vessels from countries involved in attacks against Iran, adding that ships from neutral nations would be assisted.

Despite the escalating rhetoric, some vessels, including Indian-flagged ships, have reportedly continued to secure safe passage through the strait, a key corridor for global oil shipments.
