A major leadership crisis has escalated within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) as the faction led by Tajudeen Baruwa on Monday forcefully took over the union’s national secretariat in Abuja, effectively announcing the removal of Ayinde Akinsanya as president.
According to information gathered by CEOAFRICA, members loyal to Baruwa stormed the union’s headquarters in the early hours of Monday, asserting control over the premises in what marks a dramatic turn in the protracted leadership dispute within the organization.
The development is the latest in a lingering internal crisis that has fractured the union since 2024, with rival factions emerging under Baruwa and Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo. While Akinsanya was elected National President by members of the union in November 2024, the legitimacy of that election was subsequently challenged in court.
A judicial ruling later affirmed Baruwa’s leadership, a decision that has continued to fuel tensions within the union. Despite the court’s pronouncement, MC Oluomo had maintained his position and continued to operate as president, deepening the division.
Monday’s takeover signals a decisive move by the Baruwa faction to enforce the court’s ruling and consolidate control of the union’s national structure.
As of press time, there has been no official response from MC Oluomo or his loyalists, raising concerns over potential escalation and the broader implications for the stability of one of Nigeria’s most influential transport unions.
