President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office in May 2023 to a newly established welfare fund for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces and their families.

The President made the announcement in a statement issued on Sunday to commemorate his 74th birthday, describing the initiative as a personal commitment to support military personnel and honour their sacrifices.

According to him, he has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to create a dedicated account for the fund, which will cater to serving personnel, those injured in the line of duty, and families of fallen soldiers.

“As a personal commitment, all my salaries since assuming office will be paid into this account as seed funding, irrespective of existing insurance and welfare schemes,” Tinubu said.

He added that the fund would provide direct assistance to wounded soldiers, particularly those who have suffered permanent injuries, as well as widows, widowers, and children of deceased personnel.

The President also called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector stakeholders, and Nigerians at large to support the initiative once operational details are made public.

“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families. This is not charity; it is a duty,” he stated.

The announcement builds on Tinubu’s previous support for the military. In December 2025, he launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem and appeal fund at the State House in Abuja, donating ₦200 million towards the ₦320 million raised. At the event, he also unveiled the “Thank a Soldier” digital platform and announced a Ministry of Defence programme aimed at deploying retired military personnel to help secure ungoverned areas.

Tinubu marked his birthday with a low-key celebration, citing the current national mood and ongoing economic reforms. Despite this, he received goodwill messages from governors across the country.
