Business leaders, corporate executives and stakeholders across Nigeria’s commercial sector have celebrated renowned pharmacist, corporate icon and statesman, Mazi Sam I. Ohuabunwa, FPSN, MON, OFR, NPOM, Ugboma Eji Agamba, as he marks his 76th birthday.

Ohuabunwa, a recipient of the Distinguished Sales Leadership Lifetime Award, is widely recognised for a distinguished career marked by corporate excellence, mentorship, philanthropy and sustained advocacy for Nigeria’s economic and industrial development.

Born in Port Harcourt in 1950 to parents from Arochukwu, Abia State, Ohuabunwa’s early education at Okrika Grammar School was interrupted by the Nigerian Civil War. He later completed his secondary education at Government Secondary School, Owerri, before obtaining a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, in 1976.

He subsequently underwent executive management training at Columbia University, New York, further strengthening the academic and professional foundation for a career that would span corporate leadership, public service and national advocacy.

Ohuabunwa began his professional career with Pfizer Products Plc in 1978 as a sales representative and rose through the ranks to become Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

In 1997, following Pfizer’s decision to reduce its corporate operations in Nigeria, he led a management buy-out of the company’s 60 per cent equity stake, resulting in the emergence of Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc as a major indigenous pharmaceutical manufacturer.

He subsequently led Neimeth for 18 years before retiring as Chief Executive Officer in 2011.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Ohuabunwa has remained a prominent voice in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical and industrial sectors, advocating local manufacturing, professional development, enterprise growth and policies capable of strengthening the country’s healthcare and economic systems.

He has also held leadership and influential positions in organisations including the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria.

Through these platforms, he consistently championed private-sector-led economic growth, industrialisation, deregulation, enterprise development and job creation.

His contribution to national development extended to advisory and leadership roles on initiatives associated with Vision 2010 and Vision 2020, as well as service on the boards of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme and the National Health Insurance Scheme.

His contributions to national development and professional service earned him several national honours, including Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM).

Ohuabunwa, a former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, also ventured into politics and was a presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 election cycle.

Beyond the boardroom and public service, he has built a reputation as a mentor and advocate for ethical leadership. Through executive coaching, public speaking and personal mentorship, he has influenced generations of entrepreneurs, sales professionals and corporate executives in Nigeria and beyond.

His philanthropic efforts have equally formed a significant part of his legacy. Through the Sam Ohuabunwa Foundation, he has supported initiatives in education, healthcare, youth empowerment and community development, including scholarships, health outreaches and enterprise support.

Despite his national and international profile, Ohuabunwa has maintained strong ties with his community in Arochukwu, where he remains involved in grassroots development initiatives.

His humility, accessibility and concern for the welfare of others have further strengthened his reputation among colleagues, employees, protégés and members of the wider public.

His professional and community engagements have been complemented by a strong commitment to family and faith. He is married with five children and ten grandchildren and is a Knight of Saint Christopher in the Anglican Communion of Nigeria.

He also serves as National Coordinator of the Strategic Outreaches Group of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship, where he promotes values-driven leadership, mentorship and ethical conduct in business.
