Top leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have converged on Kano to receive former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as he prepares to formally defect to the party.
Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election, announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect in a statement dated March 29, 2026. He said his decision was driven by the need for a strategic political realignment in response to the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape.
Among the prominent political figures already in Kano for the anticipated declaration are the National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi. Also present is former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
Kwankwaso is expected to officially receive his ADC membership card later on Monday.
Amaechi was received on arrival in Kano by a former Deputy Governor of the state, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo. Meanwhile, several other political stakeholders, including Senator Marafa, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, and key northern leaders, are currently in the state ahead of the formal declaration.
In a related development, Kano Central Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, a member of the Kwankwasiyya movement, alongside former APC governorship candidate in Kano, Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, are reportedly engaged in strategic consultations to finalize arrangements for Kwankwaso’s entry into the ADC.
As of the time of filing this report, thousands of supporters had gathered at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano, waving ADC flags and chanting solidarity songs in anticipation of the official announcement.
