The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Thursday visited Plateau State to commiserate with the government and residents following the deadly gunmen attack in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area.

During a visit to the Government House in Jos, where he was received by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the IGP condemned the attack, describing it as “tragic and unacceptable,” and assured that those responsible would be brought to justice.

Disu disclosed that, as part of immediate security measures, he had deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Shehu Nadada, to Plateau State. The DIG is tasked with assessing the situation, coordinating ongoing security operations, and strengthening existing strategies in collaboration with other security agencies.

The police chief also extended his condolences to the state government, affected families, and residents of Angwan Rukuba, reiterating the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the area.

In his remarks, Governor Mutfwang expressed appreciation for the support and solidarity shown by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security chiefs, noting that their response provides renewed hope for addressing the state’s longstanding security challenges.

The governor observed that insecurity in Plateau State predates his administration, recalling that previous governors—including Joshua Dariye, Jonah Jang, and Simon Lalong—also grappled with similar issues.

“It is when you sit on this seat that you appreciate the magnitude of the problem,” Mutfwang said.

He called on community leaders to promote vigilance among residents, discourage complacency, and address the misuse of social media platforms, which he said often exacerbate tensions through the circulation of outdated or misleading content.

As part of efforts to curb criminal activities, the governor announced stricter enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles, while also pledging to modernise the state’s transportation system.

Mutfwang further revealed that security agencies are pursuing useful leads from the Angwan Rukuba attack and expressed optimism that the perpetrators would soon be apprehended. He urged residents to support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that combating violence is a collective responsibility.

The governor also commended the IGP for aligning with the President’s vision for policing reforms, describing the concept of state policing as a strategic restructuring aimed at enhancing efficiency rather than dismantling the existing system.
