Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election in Kebbi State.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by Mohammed Doka, Malami’s special assistant on media, and shared via the former minister’s X account.
According to the statement, Malami expressed appreciation to party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters for the confidence reposed in him ahead of the governorship contest.
The ADC also confirmed other candidates for the National Assembly elections in the state. Aminu Bande, a retired military officer, was affirmed as the party’s senatorial candidate for Kebbi Central, while Ibrahim Mera, a retired deputy comptroller-general, secured the ticket for Kebbi North Senatorial District. Garba Danjuma emerged as the candidate for Kebbi South.
Doka said Malami remains committed to providing purposeful leadership and promoting good governance, justice, security, and sustainable development in Kebbi State and across Nigeria.
“Together, with unity and determination, we shall build a more prosperous future for generations to come,” the statement read.
Malami formally declared his intention to contest the governorship election in November 2025, saying his decision was driven by the need to rescue Kebbi State from what he described as worsening hardship and insecurity under the current administration.
The former AGF is, however, currently facing legal challenges. He is standing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja over separate criminal charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
In January, the court ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties allegedly linked to Malami and two of his sons, Abdulaziz Malami and Abiru Rahman Malami, over claims that the assets were proceeds of unlawful activities.
