Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has urged Nigeria's security chiefs to eradicate terrorist groups within 90 days or step down from their positions, citing the country's persistent security challenges.
Speaking in a video shared on the church's official X account on Tuesday, Adeboye called on the Federal Government to take decisive action against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across the country.
"If I were asked to make suggestions, I would quietly say to our government, move fast and tell our security chiefs: get rid of these terrorists within 90 days or resign," the cleric said.
Adeboye stressed that while religious leaders can offer guidance, the responsibility for ensuring national security ultimately lies with the Commander-in-Chief and the nation's security institutions.
The RCCG leader recalled giving similar advice to former President Muhammadu Buhari during his administration's fight against Boko Haram insurgents. According to Adeboye, Buhari adopted the recommendation by directing security agencies to intensify efforts against terrorists and criminal elements but did not enforce consequences when the objective was not achieved within the stipulated period.
"He ran with that advice, but he didn't follow it through. The three months passed, and the work was not done," Adeboye said.
He disclosed that he later questioned the former president about his decision not to act after the deadline expired but declined to reveal details of their discussion.
Adeboye also urged the current administration to expand its focus beyond armed groups and target individuals and networks that finance and support terrorist activities.
"When giving orders to the service chiefs this time around, it should be made clear that they are not only to eliminate the terrorists but also those who sponsor them, regardless of how influential they may be," he stated.
The cleric's comments come amid growing public concern over insecurity in several parts of the country, marked by recurring incidents of kidnapping, attacks on communities, and assaults on educational institutions.
Recent incidents include the May 15 attack on two schools in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, where gunmen abducted pupils and teachers. One of the abducted teachers was later killed, further heightening concerns over the safety of schools and vulnerable communities.
In response to the incident, President Bola Tinubu ordered the deployment of a specialised security unit equipped with advanced rescue capabilities to support efforts aimed at securing the release of the remaining victims.
The Ogbomoso attack is one of several high-profile security incidents recorded across Nigeria in recent months, underscoring ongoing concerns about the country's security situation.
