The Nigerian military has rescued Mrs. Amina Abubakar, wife of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, weeks after she was abducted alongside her husband by bandits in Katsina State.
The Defence Headquarters announced the development on Monday, stating that the operation was carried out by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA with support from the Nigerian Air Force following intensified search-and-rescue efforts.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, troops engaged the kidnappers at Tunga Village during ongoing operations targeting criminal elements in the area.
According to the military, the bandits shot Mrs. Abubakar during the encounter but abandoned her and fled as troops advanced on their position.
“The rescue operation followed intensified search-and-rescue efforts conducted by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA. During sustained offensive operations and pressure mounted on the criminal elements, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of Mrs. Abubakar,” the statement said.
The military added that Mrs. Abubakar was immediately evacuated to a military medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment and responding positively.
“Mrs. Abubakar was immediately evacuated and is currently receiving medical attention at a military hospital, where she is responding to treatment,” Uba stated.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring her full recovery and providing support to her family during the difficult period.
The military also pledged to continue operations aimed at apprehending those responsible for the abduction and other criminal activities.
“Troops will continue ongoing operations to track down and neutralise the perpetrators, while intensifying efforts to rid affected communities of terrorists, not just in Katsina but across the country,” the statement added.
Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, died in captivity after he and his wife were kidnapped by bandits several weeks ago.
