The Senate has summoned lawmakers for an emergency sitting on June 23 to deliberate on national security concerns and other pressing issues facing the country.

In a notice dated June 15 and signed by Emmanuel Odo, Clerk of the Senate, senators were directed to reconvene at the Senate Chamber by 11:00 a.m.

According to the notice, the emergency session was convened at the instance of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

“The purpose of this emergency sitting is to enable the Senate to consider matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention,” the notice stated.

The Senate also expressed regret for any inconvenience the unexpected sitting might cause and urged lawmakers to make the necessary arrangements to attend.

The emergency session effectively shortens the Senate’s ongoing recess. The upper legislative chamber had adjourned plenary on June 11 and was originally scheduled to resume on July 7.

The decision comes amid increasing concerns over insecurity across the country, with recent attacks, kidnappings, and other security incidents reported in several states.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives also reconvened on Monday for an emergency sitting to consider an amendment to the 2025 Appropriation Act. The proposed amendment seeks to extend the implementation period for the capital component of the budget from June 30 to September 30.
