Ghana kicked off their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in their Group L opener in Toronto on Wednesday.

The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when Caleb Yirenkyi found the back of the net in the fifth minute of added time, sparking jubilant celebrations among the large Ghanaian crowd in attendance and breaking the deadlock in an intensely contested encounter.

Panama threatened early in the match, with striker Cecilio Waterman forcing a save from Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi just two minutes after kickoff. However, clear-cut chances were scarce for both sides throughout the opening half, with the Black Stars failing to register a shot on target before the break.

Played under persistent rain, the second half produced more attacking intent from both teams. Panama came close to taking the lead in the 60th minute when Cristian Martinez fired a powerful effort into the side netting, drawing a huge reaction from the Panamanian supporters inside the stadium.

As the game appeared destined to end goalless, Yirenkyi emerged as Ghana's hero, converting a late opportunity to secure all three points for the Black Stars.

Following the dramatic winner, Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz celebrated with the fans, encouraging them to revel in the memorable moment. The experienced Portuguese tactician only assumed charge of the team a few months before the tournament.

The match also marked a significant milestone for Queiroz, who became just the second coach to participate in five consecutive FIFA World Cups, having previously led Portugal in 2010 and Iran in 2014, 2018, and 2022.

The crowd of nearly 43,000 spectators endured heavy rain throughout the contest, with loud boos echoing around the stadium during a second-half hydration break.

Ghana's victory was achieved without midfielder Thomas Partey, who was unavailable for the tournament after Canadian authorities denied him a visa while legal proceedings against him continue in the United Kingdom.

The late triumph gives Ghana an important start to their World Cup journey and a valuable three points in Group L.
