Veteran Nigerian entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has revealed that he engaged in criminal activities during his youth while living in the United States.

The outspoken social commentator made the disclosure on Friday during an appearance on Prime Time, a programme aired on Arise Television.

Reflecting on his past, Charly Boy admitted to making several poor decisions and engaging in actions he now regrets.

“I’ve made mistakes in my life. I’ve been a thief. I’ve done very risky things. I’ve done very stupid things, very foolish things. In fact, I have no business being here with you tonight, but I guess there’s a purpose for my life,” he said.

The activist further disclosed that he was involved in white-collar crimes during his time in America, describing that period of his life as one marked by reckless behaviour.

“I was doing white-collar crime when I was in America. I was about 25 years old. I was doing a lot of stupid stuff. That’s why I say I’ve been there,” he added.

Charly Boy said he chose not to conceal those experiences, instead documenting them in his memoir as part of an honest account of his journey from youthful rebellion and poor choices to personal growth, transformation and self-discovery.
