Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has declared that his incarceration will not deter him from pursuing justice and political change in Nigeria.

Sowore made the statement in a post on X shortly after his release from the Kuje Correctional Centre on Tuesday, insisting that his commitment to the struggle remains unshaken.

“Prison has never broken the resolve of those who fight for justice. If anything, it only strengthens our determination,” he wrote.

“The struggle continues. We will never surrender. #RevolutionNow #Sowore2027.”

Earlier on Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Sowore bail in the sum of N200 million.

The court directed him to provide two sureties, one of whom must be a traditional ruler from his community, while the other must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

As part of the bail conditions, the court also ordered the activist to deposit his international passport with the court registrar pending the conclusion of the trial.

The presiding judge further ordered that Sowore be released to his lawyers pending the fulfilment of the bail requirements.

Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) on a two-count charge stemming from a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal” on his X and Facebook accounts.

The activist has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He was initially granted bail on self-recognition. However, on June 16, the court revoked the bail and issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for proceedings.

The judge ruled that a letter seeking an adjournment on Sowore’s behalf failed to provide sufficient reasons for his absence from court.

On June 22, Justice Musa Umar ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.

The court had also dismissed an application filed by Sowore seeking the judge’s recusal from the case over allegations of bias.
