The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has filed an eight-count criminal charge against Adeniyi Adeyemi, convener of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, over allegations linked to the controversial agency.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the charges were filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 27, 2025, against Adeyemi and two alleged accomplices. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 27, 2026.
Onanuga said the case originated after Femi Gbajabiamila alerted the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police in October 2025 following complaints that the purported agency was operating alongside the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission.
According to the presidential spokesman, Gbajabiamila informed security agencies that forged appointment letters bearing his signature, official seals and reference numbers were being used to legitimise the organisation.
Police investigations led to Adeyemi’s arrest in Abuja on October 27, 2025, during which officers reportedly recovered forged documents from his office and residence.
“Based on their investigations, the police filed an eight-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against Adeyemi and two of his accomplices on November 27, 2025. He is due in court on July 27,” Onanuga stated.
He added that Adeyemi was on police bail when he allegedly claimed that the Chief of Staff had appointed him as Director-General of the agency.
Onanuga further disclosed that Adeyemi told investigators that one Dolapo Babatunde Tanimola helped him obtain the alleged fake appointment letter.
However, police investigations reportedly revealed that Tanimola died in a fire incident at Kachi Hotel in Abuja on October 22, 2025—five days before Adeyemi's arrest.
“Following his claim, the police went after the said Tanimola. The police found that Tanimola died in a fire incident at Kachi Hotel in Abuja on October 22, five days before Adeyemi’s arrest,” Onanuga said.
He added that officers confirmed Tanimola’s death after identifying his body at a morgue.
According to the presidency, investigators established that the agency Adeyemi claimed to head was fictitious and that he allegedly forged his appointment letter and other documents recovered from his office and residence. He was also accused of falsely presenting himself as a government appointee and seeking a note verbale from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate the acquisition of United States visas for himself and members of his team.
The controversy intensified after Gbajabiamila stated on June 11 that the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council does not exist under the administration of President Bola Tinubu and denied appointing Adeyemi to any position within such an organisation.
Adeyemi subsequently challenged the claim, questioning how the agency appeared in the 2026 federal budget if it was indeed non-existent.
However, a review of the 2026 Appropriation Act by TheCable showed that the Presidential Economic Advisory Council/Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council was listed under the Presidency with a budget allocation of N1.3 billion.
The allocation comprises N802.98 million for personnel costs, N200 million for overhead expenditure and N300 million for capital projects.
