A former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has announced a special prayer and remembrance gathering to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, Ahmad said the event would take place on Monday, July 13, to celebrate Buhari’s life, legacy and dedicated service to Nigeria.
“On Monday, July 13, we will gather in solemn remembrance to honour the life, legacy and enduring service of our late boss, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, one year after his passing,” Ahmad stated.
He described Buhari as a statesman who served Nigeria with commitment, integrity, discipline and patriotism, noting that his contributions to national development would remain an enduring part of the country's history.
According to Ahmad, family members, friends, political associates and Nigerians from different walks of life are expected to participate in the gathering, which will feature prayers and reflections in honour of the late leader. Participants will also pray for Allah’s mercy upon Buhari, asking that he be granted Al-Jannah Firdaus and that comfort be bestowed on his family and the nation.
“May Allah grant him eternal rest. Ameen,” the statement concluded.
Buhari passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a clinic in London following a prolonged illness. His remains were subsequently returned to Nigeria and buried in his hometown of Daura.
The late president served as Nigeria’s democratically elected leader from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023. He made history in 2015 as the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in a presidential election and was re-elected for a second term in 2019.
The remembrance gathering is expected to provide an opportunity for family members, former aides, political allies and supporters to reflect on Buhari’s leadership, legacy and impact on Nigeria’s political landscape one year after his death.
