A family of five has been found dead in their residence at Umuimo, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, in a tragic incident that has thrown the community into mourning.

The decomposing bodies were discovered on Tuesday, July 21, about three days after the family was last seen by neighbours.

Residents said the deceased were last spotted on Saturday, July 18, before retiring for the night. Their prolonged absence subsequently raised concerns among neighbours and other community members, who decided to check on them after several days without any sign of activity.

Upon gaining access to the house, they discovered the lifeless bodies of all five family members.

The victims were identified as Mr. Kachi Nnabugwu, his wife, Mrs. Chinaza Nnabugwu, and their three children.

Sources said containers of leftover food and a generator were found inside the house after the residence was forced open. However, the cause of the deaths has yet to be established.

The bodies were evacuated from the compound and deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

A video circulating on social media showed residents performing traditional rites following the shocking discovery.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the case was reported to the Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters by the deceased's brother after repeated attempts to reach the family proved unsuccessful.

She said, "The attention of the Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters was drawn to the incident on July 22, 2026, by the brother of the deceased, who reported that after being unable to reach Kachi Nnabugwu, they proceeded to his residence at Umuimo Village in Osisioma Local Government Area.

"Upon arrival, repeated knocks yielded no response. They subsequently forced entry into the house, where they discovered the lifeless and decomposing bodies of their brother and his family.

"The crime scene has been visited. A preliminary visual inspection of the bodies was conducted, photographs were taken, and the corpses have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy."

DSP Chinaka added that investigations are ongoing, while the outcome of the autopsy is expected to determine the cause of the deaths.
