The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing new measures to strengthen the regulation of private and voluntary educational institutions, including stricter oversight of tuition fee increases.

The bill was approved during Monday’s plenary after lawmakers considered and adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, which conducted public hearings and consulted with relevant stakeholders before presenting its recommendations.

Speaking after the bill's passage, Speaker of the House, Ismail Falgore, praised lawmakers for their contributions throughout the legislative process, describing the amendment as a major step toward improving the administration and management of private and voluntary schools in Kano State.

A key provision of the amended law establishes the office of an Executive Secretary to enhance the effective management of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Board.

The legislation also requires private and voluntary schools to obtain official approval before increasing tuition fees or other charges, a move aimed at preventing arbitrary fee hikes.

According to the Assembly, the new measure is designed to protect parents and guardians from excessive and unjustified increases in school fees by ensuring that any proposed adjustment is subject to regulatory approval.

The amendment followed extensive consultations with education stakeholders during public hearings organised by the House Committee on Education before its final consideration and passage.
