The Osun State Police Command has disclosed that music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, was allegedly the target of the violence that disrupted Governor Ademola Adeleke’s convoy in Osogbo on Wednesday.
According to the command, preliminary investigations revealed that a suspected cult member attempted to approach Davido during the governor’s visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo but was stopped by members of the singer’s security team.
The police said the confrontation later escalated when other suspected gang members joined the incident, reportedly blocking the palace entrance and preventing the governor’s convoy from moving freely.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, identified the alleged instigator as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged.”
Ojelabi described Taoreed as an ex-convict, suspected notorious thug and alleged member of the Eye Confraternity.
He said, “One Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as ‘Small Rugged’, an ex-convict, a suspected notorious thug and a member of Eye Confraternity allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of his security team.”
He added that the confrontation attracted other suspected gang members in the area, who allegedly blocked the palace entrance and obstructed the governor’s convoy.
The incident occurred after Governor Adeleke visited the Ataoja’s palace following his collection of a Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Davido, who actively campaigned for his uncle during the August 15 governorship election, accompanied the governor during Wednesday’s engagements.
The disturbance reportedly triggered sustained gunfire around the Oja Oba area, with security operatives attached to the governor’s convoy responding to the situation.
Police later confirmed that a 60-year-old man, identified as Tajudeen Yusuf, was shot dead at Itaolokan area of Osogbo after the suspected gang members reportedly fled the scene.
Ojelabi said, “Shortly afterwards, the suspected gang members reportedly departed the vicinity and, however on their way, they allegedly shot Tajudeen Yusuf at Itaolokan area of Osogbo.”
The police command said investigations are ongoing to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
