The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has promised to install solar power systems on every Nigerian household within 11 months of assuming office if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Adebayo made the pledge on Tuesday while responding to questions during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time.

He criticised successive governments for relying on costly conventional grid expansion and rural electrification projects, particularly the deployment of 33kV lines, instead of embracing decentralised renewable energy solutions.

According to him, Nigeria can achieve more reliable electricity supply by promoting local production of solar panels and equipping communities with the skills required to install and maintain the systems.

“Between 11 and 15 kW of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months of my presidency,” Adebayo said.

He recalled that in 2001, during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he had recommended a partnership with countries such as China or India to establish solar-panel manufacturing plants in Nigeria and train Nigerians in their installation.

“In 2001, the Obasanjo administration invited me, and I advised them to enter into an agreement with China or India, set up a factory to make solar panels, and train people to install them,” he said.

Adebayo also alleged that funds available to local government areas could be redirected towards financing the proposed nationwide solar initiative if properly utilised.

“Every Local Government Area has money that they steal every month to capitalise on this,” he added.
