The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has alleged that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, worked for his political opposition during the 2023 general election.

Obi made the allegation in an exclusive interview with ARISE News, where he faulted Nigerians for placing too much trust in INEC’s assurances ahead of the 2023 elections.

According to him, Nigerians and the international community were assured by the electoral commission’s leadership that the election would be conducted fairly and credibly.

However, Obi alleged that despite those assurances, the INEC chairman was working for his opposition.

“In 2023, we took things for granted. We believed INEC. We believed what they said they would do.

“The INEC Chairman convinced the world that he would do the right thing, when, in fact, he was working for the opposition.

“This time, we will only trust them by doing the right thing ourselves,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor, however, did not provide specific evidence in the remarks made during the interview to support his allegation against Yakubu.

Obi’s comments come amid renewed calls for electoral reforms and greater transparency in the conduct of elections in Nigeria.
