The Federal Government has fulfilled its cash reward to members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic fifth consecutive victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed that the naira equivalent of $100,000 has been paid to each player, while each member of the team’s technical and administrative crew received the equivalent of $50,000.

According to the commission, the accounts of the players and officials were credited on September 9, 2026, with all beneficiaries confirming receipt of the payments.

D’Tigress made history in 2025 by winning the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title for a record fifth consecutive time, taking their overall championship tally to seven.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, the NSC said the payment marked the completion of all components of the Presidential Reward promised to the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The reward package comprises three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON), and cash awards of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each official.

“With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR comprising a 3-Bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and Naira equivalent of $USD 100,000 to players and $USD 50,000 to officials have been fully redeemed and completed,” the commission said.

The NSC recalled that the D’Tigress players and officials received the title documents for their Abuja apartments and certificates of national honours in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France.

It said the documents were duly signed by President Tinubu, while the cash component was released following the team’s participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.

The commission also provided an update on the Presidential Reward for the Super Falcons, saying members of the national women’s football team had received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates of national honours.

According to the NSC, the Falcons received the documents during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco between July and August 2026, while the cash component is expected to be paid before their next official engagements.

The Super Falcons were promised the same financial package of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each official.

The NSC said the rewards demonstrate the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare and recognition of Nigerian athletes.

It described the rewards as part of the Renewed Hope initiative and Shared Prosperity agenda of the Tinubu administration, which, according to the commission, places athletes’ welfare and appropriate recognition among its priorities.

The commission also commended President Tinubu for his support for Nigerian sports, noting that his policies had strengthened its reform agenda and efforts to build a sustainable sports economy.

It further appreciated the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation for their roles in implementing the reward package.

The NSC said the collaboration enabled the Presidential Rewards to be delivered “in record time within the due process requirements.”
