The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reacted to the controversy surrounding his wife, Margaret, following reports that she was seen with an alleged N250 million Hermès handbag.

The luxury bag has generated widespread reactions, with some Nigerians questioning how the item fits into Obi’s public image of prudence and financial discipline.

Speaking during an interview in Washington, DC, United States, Obi said his wife has her own business and finances, stressing that she is entitled to spend her money as she wishes.

The former Anambra State governor said his wife was even more sophisticated in her lifestyle before he became governor.

Obi maintained that he has no problem with his wife purchasing expensive items with her own money, provided her lifestyle does not interfere with his management of public resources.

“My wife has her own business and her own money, so what is my business if she buys expensive items with her money?

“The bags and shoes my wife wears, I don’t even know how much they cost. In fact, she is actually a bit less sophisticated now,” Obi said.

He also disclosed that he did not establish an Office of the First Lady while serving as governor of Anambra State.

Obi further explained that although he does not personally celebrate his birthday, he does not stop people from celebrating him.
