The Ondo State Government has restricted the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okadas, on some major routes in Akure, the state capital, as part of measures to improve traffic management and road safety.

The government said okada riders would only be allowed to operate up to designated points along the affected routes.

According to the governor’s Transport Adviser, riders coming from the Police Officers’ Mess axis will be required to stop at approved locations, while those approaching from the First Bank area in Alagbaka will terminate operations around the Teaching Service Commission axis.

The government also warned that commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators who violate traffic regulations, particularly by disobeying traffic signals, would face arrest and prosecution.

The Transport Adviser said the enforcement of traffic laws would be intensified following public awareness campaigns designed to prepare residents for changes arising from ongoing infrastructure projects, including the construction of a flyover in Akure.

He stressed that road users must adapt to modern traffic management measures by obeying traffic lights and using designated bus stops.

The official said the government would no longer tolerate violations, noting that some okada and tricycle operators had developed the habit of moving before the traffic light turned green.

The government also announced plans to install zebra crossings and speed-limit signs, particularly around schools and other sensitive areas, to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce traffic-related risks.

Residents were urged to cooperate with the government as it implements measures aimed at modernising transportation and improving traffic flow across Akure.
