A US federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to immediately restore White House access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico after the news organisations were barred from the premises.

US District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a 14-day temporary restraining order requiring the administration to reinstate the outlets’ hard-pass press credentials while their legal challenge continues.

Kelly found that the revocation of the reporters’ press passes was likely carried out without constitutionally adequate due process, noting that the organisations were not given adequate notice or an opportunity to respond before their credentials were withdrawn.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico had jointly challenged the ban, arguing that their exclusion violated the First Amendment and their right to due process.

The outlets were barred from the White House after President Donald Trump accused them of publishing what he described as “fake news.”

The judge’s order requires the administration to restore the journalists’ access as the case proceeds.
