Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to visit the remaining 33 states of the federation after spending a night in Akwa Ibom State.
Obi made the challenge in a post on his X account on Saturday, following Tinubu’s visit to Akwa Ibom, where the President described his overnight stay as a “second term presidential sleep” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Anambra State governor congratulated Tinubu on spending a night outside Lagos and Abuja but urged him to make similar visits across the country to engage with citizens and explain the performance of his administration.
Obi said the President should use the opportunity to account for the resources available to his government, including the savings from fuel subsidy removal, loans obtained and increased government revenue.
He specifically demanded an explanation of what had been achieved with the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from subsidy removal, over $100 billion in borrowings and additional revenue generated through taxation.
“I sincerely hope this visit will inspire you to travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation, spend time with the people and, more importantly, explain what your administration has done with the ₦15.8 trillion saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, the over $100 billion you have borrowed,” Obi said.
He also questioned the impact of the administration’s policies on poverty reduction, education, healthcare delivery and electricity supply.
Obi asked Tinubu to disclose the number of Nigerians lifted out of poverty, out-of-school children returned to classrooms and functional primary healthcare centres established since he assumed office.
On electricity, he recalled the President’s earlier pledge that Nigerians should not re-elect him if his administration failed to address the country’s persistent power challenges.
The NDC candidate also demanded answers on the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity, stressing that Nigerians deserved to know the progress made in securing the country.
“Mr President, Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government,” he added.
Obi further stated that the New Nigeria he seeks to build would be founded on accountability, transparency and the effective use of public resources to improve citizens’ welfare.
Tinubu had on Friday, while addressing supporters at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, announced that he would spend the night in the state.
He described the overnight stay as a “second term presidential sleep” and expressed confidence in winning re-election in 2027.
