Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he would not insult or abuse President Bola Tinubu, stressing that he holds the President in high regard as the nation’s leader.

Obi stated this on Friday while speaking at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, held under the theme, “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”

The former Anambra State governor said political differences should be expressed through constructive criticism of government policies and performance rather than personal attacks against public officials.

“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in the federal government. I’ve never abused anybody. Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect,” Obi said.

He, however, maintained that respect for public office does not exempt political leaders from scrutiny, stressing the need for citizens and the media to question government decisions and assess the performance of those in authority.

Obi further urged editors to examine politicians based on their records, public statements and qualifications, noting that the conduct and character of leaders could have a significant influence on the values of society.
