The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to shut the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days to carry out repairs and resurfacing.

The temporary closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation.

The authority disclosed this in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.

FAAN attributed the planned closure to the deteriorating condition of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive cracks, which have been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.

It explained that the rehabilitation project would involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected areas to improve the runway's safety and operational condition ahead of the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the Christmas season.

The authority added that the project would also involve extending the runway to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region continues to grow.

According to FAAN, the expansion is expected to enhance passenger comfort and improve the overall travel experience for airport users.

The authority urged passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to contact their respective airlines for information on flight schedules and alternative arrangements.

It assured the public that relevant stakeholders would be kept informed and that the confirmed closure and reopening dates would be communicated once finalised.

FAAN appealed for the cooperation of passengers, airlines and other airport users, stressing that the planned intervention was part of its ongoing efforts to maintain safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
