SHELL TO COMPENSATE 15,000 VILLAGERS IN RIVERS STATE.

Discussions on Multi-million dollars Compensation will resume today between

Solicitors for the Royal Dutch Shell and 15,000 Rural Dwellers of Bodo Communities, a part of Ogonil and in Gokana LG area of Rivers State.

 

The Multi-national Oil Company Shell had accepted responsibility for over two spills in 2008 that polluted the waterways of the fishing communities but Shell claiming that the volume of oil split and  the lost of employment of the people was exaggerated.

 

The Spokesman of the Company said the discussions would focus on the total of people affected, financial loss and the amount of time for which those affected should be compensated.

 

The Industry, Observer and The Environmentalists were closely monitoring the

situation of the case, A previous round of compensation talks broke down in 2012,following which the villagers filed a suit against Shell at a London High Court in March 2012, seeking millions of dollars for compensation.

 

The region has been facing series of problems from kidnappings of Oil Staffs, theft of Crude Oil, Militant attacks to conflicts among the Communities over Compensation deals.
