After spending close to three weeks in the kidnapper’s den, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) has described his abductors as “angry graduates”.

While recounting his ordeal to newsmen after he regained his freedom at his residence in Lagos, Ozekhome appealed to the Federal Government to grant amnesty to kidnappers in the country.

According to him, when negotiation was ongoing for his release from the den of the kidnappers, his son, Ilubgeka, along with a lawyer in his chamber, Mr dominic Eezrioha, were also kidnapped by the same hoodlums on September 6. However, all of them was released yesterday morning.

Ozekhome further decried the shaky state of security in this country, as he said he did not know whether any ransom was paid to the abductors before securing their freedom.

He told newsmen that during his interactions with his abductors, they told him that they were pushed into kidnapping due to unemployment and poverty.

The human rights lawyer said he fell sick twice during his three-week ordeal, adding that his abductors brought a doctor who treated him for malaria and typhoid.

“As a matter of extreme urgency, I want the Federal Government to immediately grant amnesty to all kidnappers and institute an amnesty programme for all kidnappers. They told me that if they are given assurance that they will not be killed, they are ready to agree to the deal,” he said.

Furthermore, Ozekhome urged government to declare a state of emergency on youth unemployment and infrastructure decay, while appealing that the families of four police officers killed during his rescue mission should not be neglected.

“It was this morning that I was briefed that those gallant officers died while trying to rescue us from our abductors. Let me hereby call upon the Federal Government to set up a special foundation to cater for the welfare of the wives and children of these officers.”

While thanking Nigerians for their concern, Ozekhome debunked rumors that his abduction was politically motivated.

“We were never profiled or targeted. It could have happened to anybody,” he said.
