Enyimba Lifts 2013 Federation Cup in Nigeria…Beats Warri Wolves 5-4 on Penalty Shootout

CEOAFRICA sport desk gathered that Enyimba International Football Club of Aba yesterday won the 2013 edition of the Federation Cup by beating Warri Wolves 5-4 on penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation time.

The match which was held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos was the 68th edition of the competition.

The action-packed match saw Warri Wolves taken the lead by Najeme Musa in the 22nd minute of the game, while Eyimba’s Bright Efiome equalized for the former African Club Champions in the 62nd minute through a superb shot.

In the 78th minute of the encounter, Osadieye Joseph put Warri Wolves ahead again from a well-connected pass, but their joy was short-lived when Ugwu Nwadiegwu equalized for the Aba Millionaires from a well-taken free-kick in the 83rd minutes of the encounter.

The match ended with the scoreline and penalty kick was used to determine the winner. Super Eagles defender, Azubuike Egwuekwe, who also doubled as the captain of Warri Wolves lost his penalty, while Enyimba converted all the five spot kicks taken.

Present at the event were host Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola  of Lagos State, Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State and other dignitaries from Delta and other states.

Earlier in the day, Rivers Angels defeated Nasarawa Amazon to win the 2013 Female Federations Cup at the same venue.  

Eyimba won a coveted giant trophy and a sum of 5 million naira price money.

Meanwhile, Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan has congratulated Enyimba for their defeat. While hailing Enyimba’s fighting spirit, Uduaghan also commended Warri Wolves for their performance.

Uduaghan added that “in Delta we win most  and loose some. Congrats to both finalists”.
