Zanzibar Police Chief, Mussa Ali Mussa
Following series of acid attack recently recorded in Zanzibar, Police said they have arrested 15 people in connection with the act, CEOAFRICA.com gathered.
Confirming the arrest, Police commissioner Mussa Ali Mussa claimed some of the suspects were connected with the Islamist extremist group al-Shabab.
It would be recalled that last week, an elderly Catholic priest was attacked in the capital Stone Town, after similar attack on two British women last month.
Speaking further, the police chief said 29 litres of acid was seized as part of their operation. He said the suspected al-Shabab members were caught while preparing to take part in wars outside Tanzania. They will be charged to court as soon as compilation of evidences is completed.
Zanzibar is a popular tourist destination, and locals say attacks on foreigners are rare.
Tensions between the majority Muslim population and Christians have been on the increase in recent years.
