Sociologists are set to partner President Muhammadu Buhari in conducting a sociological study on Boko Haram to understand the root causes and dynamics of the sect.

President Buhari had, during his inaugural speech, promised to commission a sociological study to understand Boko Haram.

The president, Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association of Nigeria (NASA), Professor Ifeanyi Onyeonoru, yesterday said Nigerian sociologists had for long asked government to conduct a sociological study to understand the root causes and dynamics of the Book Haram menace.

Prof. Onyeonoru in a statement in Ibadan noted that a robust sociological study was long overdue, following the changing patterns and trends of the dreaded terrorists’ activities.

While praising President Buhari for starting on a good note, Prof. Onyeonoru said Nigerian sociologists “are up to the task with many existing studies on Boko Haram.”

The industrial sociologists assured government of an all-encompassing study that will involve criminologists, medical sociologists, demographers, political sociologists, development sociologists, gender scholars, among others.‎

"We of the Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association (NASA) congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari on your swearing in as the fifth president of Nigeria and your commitment to face head-on the numerous challenges facing our dear country.

“We are particularly delighted with the president’s commitment to conduct a sociological study on the remote and immediate causes of the Boko Haram insurgency and their sponsors, among others.

“The Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association gladly expresses our willingness to partner the Federal Government in the proposed study as part of our contribution to the fight against insurgency in Nigeria," he said.
