The University of Ibadan (UI), in strategic collaboration with global educational technology provider Astria Learning, is set to open new pathways to employment, professional development and industry engagement as it prepares to host the 2026 Career Fair, an initiative designed to equip students and graduates with the skills, networks and practical exposure needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive global workforce.

Scheduled for Thursday, November 5, 2026, at the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan campus, the career fair is expected to bring students, recent graduates, corporate executives, human resource professionals, industry recruiters and other stakeholders under one roof to strengthen the connection between academic learning and workplace realities.

With the theme, “From Lecture Halls to Boardrooms: Preparing University of Ibadan Graduates for the Workplace,” the event underscores the university’s determination to ensure that its graduates are not only academically qualified but also professionally equipped to navigate the demands of modern employment, entrepreneurship and leadership.

The initiative comes at a time when employers increasingly seek candidates who combine academic credentials with digital competence, critical thinking, effective communication, adaptability and the capacity to translate knowledge into practical solutions.

Speaking on the university’s vision for the programme, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, Professor Simisola Oluwatoyin Akintola, called on students across all campuses of the institution to take full advantage of the opportunities the career fair presents.

She urged students from the main campus, the College of Medicine at the University College Hospital (UCH), and affiliated institutions to participate actively, describing the event as an important platform for career discovery, professional networking and preparation for life beyond the university.

According to her, the contemporary employment landscape requires far more than academic certificates, making it imperative for students to understand industry expectations, develop relevant competencies and establish professional relationships before completing their studies.

Professor Akintola stressed that the career fair should not be regarded as an ordinary campus gathering but as a strategic opportunity for students to position themselves for meaningful careers and future leadership roles.

She further emphasised the importance of deliberate career planning, technical proficiency and continuous self-development, noting that the transition from university education to the corporate environment requires intentional preparation and a clear understanding of the skills employers value.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor identified effective communication, critical thinking, adaptability, emotional intelligence, resilience and mentorship as essential ingredients for long-term career advancement.

She also encouraged students to strengthen their digital proficiency, become familiar with contemporary professional tools, improve their financial literacy and develop a sound understanding of cybersecurity, stressing that these competencies are increasingly important in a technology-driven economy.

Beyond acquiring qualifications, she maintained that graduates must understand their professional value, identify opportunities for growth and cultivate the confidence required to compete effectively in local and international labour markets.

In a move expected to further expand the initiative’s impact, Professor Akintola commended Astria Learning for its partnership with the university, acknowledging the role of digital education in widening access to learning resources and strengthening workforce readiness.

Astria Learning, a global educational technology provider focused on eCampus platforms and digital learning solutions, is expected to contribute to the fair’s broader objective of exposing students to emerging technologies, accessible learning opportunities and digital resources capable of supporting their professional development.

The collaboration reflects the growing importance of partnerships between universities and technology-driven organisations in preparing graduates for an evolving employment environment in which digital skills, innovation and adaptability are increasingly indispensable.

A major attraction of the event will be the interactive Employer Engagement Segment, which will provide a platform for direct engagement between University of Ibadan students and representatives of multinational companies, industrial organisations and professional bodies.

Through these interactions, participants will have opportunities to learn about available employment and internship openings, understand recruitment procedures, explore scholarship opportunities and gain first-hand insights into the expectations of prospective employers.

The programme will also feature practical masterclasses and career development sessions focusing on workplace ethics, personal branding, professional conduct and pathways to career advancement.

For students approaching graduation, the event is expected to offer valuable insight into the realities of the labour market, while recent graduates and job seekers will have opportunities to expand their professional networks and explore possible entry points into different industries.

The President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Government (SUG), Comrade Adeboye Temidayo, also threw his weight behind the initiative, urging students across faculties, halls of residence and campuses to participate fully.

He described the career fair as an important opportunity for students to move beyond classroom learning and gain practical knowledge of the professional world.

According to him, students must begin preparing for their careers before graduation by building relevant skills, developing professional relationships and understanding the expectations of employers.

Temidayo encouraged UI students to take advantage of the opportunity to engage directly with corporate leaders, human resource directors and industry professionals, noting that such interactions could provide valuable guidance on internships, employment opportunities and further educational prospects.

He urged students not to remain passive observers of the changing employment landscape but to take deliberate steps towards developing the competence, confidence and connections required to succeed.

The Convener of the career fair, Dr Oluchi Maduka, disclosed that registration is open to students, job seekers and prospective corporate partners interested in participating in the programme.

Interested participants and organisations can obtain further information and register through the university’s official strategic partnership channels via careerfair@ui.edu.ng or +234 806 073 6089.

As the University of Ibadan and Astria Learning prepare to bring academia and industry closer together, the 2026 Career Fair is positioned as more than a networking event: it represents a strategic investment in the next generation of professionals, innovators and business leaders.

Ultimately, the success of the initiative will be measured not merely by attendance, but by the opportunities it unlocks, the professional relationships it establishes and the extent to which it helps transform university graduates from holders of academic qualifications into workplace-ready talents capable of competing and excelling on the global stage.
