An Instagram post plugging pills for morning sickness has fueled a firestorm around pregnant Kim Kardashian.
Kim posted a photo of herself on Monday holding the prescription drug Diclegis; a reformulated version of a pill pulled from shelves in the 1980s after widespread fears that it might have caused birth defects emerged.
While those fears have been debunked according to the drug's maker and the FDA, which approved the new version in 2013, some moms on social media have assailed the reality star for choosing to shill the pill.
While Kim might be in line with laws governing such endorsements, her Instagram post is rife with angry detractors, who call the expecting mother unethical or worse.
‘‘Nothing helps morning sickness! Ladies don't take the pills. She only shows them because she can cash in the money on that!’’ wrote one Instagrammer.
Another wrote: ‘‘Selfish to treat yourself for this. Don't u know morning sickness is a sign of a strong fetus? Leave it to Kim to market this crap’’
While another fumed: ‘‘Kim I wouldn't advise 39 million women to take a pill. You don't know the side effects it will have on your fetus.’’
Another user laughed it off: ‘‘lol & when she's 70 she'll prolly be advertising osteoporosis pills to us cause it never ends #theshowgoeson #whataworld.’’
In the intervening decades since the drug once known as Bendectin, the treatment is widely believed to have undergone more scrutiny for safety than any other drug used during pregnancy.
