President Muhammadu Buahri might have upset the Niger-Delta, following a statement he made while reacting to question on the region, which has consequently led to the regroup of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) militants, to deliberate on the course of the region under the present administration.
Reactions have been trailing comments from President Buhari after he said people don’t expect him to treat those that gave him 97 per cent vote equally with those that gave him five per cent.
When asked about his plans for the Niger-Delta, the president answered: “I hope you have a copy of the election results. Virtually constituencies, for example, that gave me 97 per cent cannot in all honesty be treated on some issues with constituencies that gave me five per cent. That is a political reality.
“While certainly, there will be justice for everybody. Everybody will get his constitutional right, but where the party, in constituencies that either by sheer hard work they made sure that they got their people to vote for and made sure that their vote counts.
“They must feel that the government has appreciated the effort they put in putting the government in place. I think this is really fair,” he said.
Meanwhile a meeting has been scheduled by the leader of the MEND, Government Ekpemupolo also known as Tompolo, scheduled for July 25 at Izon House, Bayelsa State, Yenagoa.
Tompolo, while speaking to journalists confirmed that the meeting was aimed at “deliberating on recent developments in Nigeria as well as the fate of the Niger Delta region in the current political dispensation.”
It should be noted that in the weeks leading up to the general election, Tompolo and other militant group leaders had threatened to make the country ungovernable if Jonathan lost. But, in a surprise move, he appealed for calm after Buhari emerged the winner of the keenly contested race.
