Officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were on Thursday, beaten up by some angry members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Osogbo, Osun State capital over an arrest of one of their members.
The bus driver, who was alleged of not having proper documentation of his vehicle was arrested by the FRSC personnel. Our correspondent gathered that the driver was however asked to drive to the commission's office, along Ogo Oluwa area of Osogbo but the driver sped off.
His action, according to the commission made the FRSC patrol team go after the erring driver, who quickly drove to the popular Olaiya Junction, where some drivers, who had gathered, beat up the FRSC officers on sight.
The protesting drivers were said to have fully armed themselves with dangerous weapons and stormed the office of the FRSC, where they beat officers and vandalised some vehicles.
Meanwhile, the arrival of the Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corpse (NSCDC) prevented the crisis, which could have led to a total breakdown of law and order.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Mohammed Hussein, who confirmed the attack on his men said his official car was also vandalised.
He said: “During the attack at Ola-Iya Junction, my official car was also damaged. I reported the case to the office of the Area Commander, the Civil Defence Commandant and also the Director of DSS.
“I also called the NURTW national president to report the issue before they could calm down. Some of my personnel were beaten up while one of them was beaten with charms, which rendered him unconscious, but he had been revived.
“We arrested two members of the group but the reason for the attack is yet to be known because we maintain a cordial relationship with NURTW nationwide," he explained.
