Protests against the Lebanese government turned violent for a second day on Sunday as protesters clashed with the police over the government’s failure to remove uncollected rubbish from the streets. Prime Minister Tammam Salam has also threatened to resign.
Unrest has been building because of the government's failure to clear up rubbish piled on the streets of Beirut since the country's biggest landfill closed last month. Protesters blame political paralysis and corruption for the failure to resolve the crisis.
In the meantime, organizers of the "You Stink" campaign leading the protest against a garbage disposal crisis said they have postponed a demonstration set for today’s evening. They announced on their Facebook page that they would hold a news conference later in the day to explain their decision.
Analysts say if Mr Salam resigns, it could trigger a constitutional crisis because in Lebanon the prime minister is appointed by the president, but the presidency has been vacant for over a year.
