Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare caved in when it mattered most as she finished last in the finals of the 100m Women’s event at the ongoing IAAF World Championships with a time of 11.02secs.

Okagbare, who finished 5th and 6th in the last two editions of the World Championships, was hoping to get it right this time in Beijing but a faulty start by the double Commonwealth Champion saw her chasing the race all through as Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce came tops with a time of 10.76secs.

The victory by Fraser-Pryce help extends Jamaica’s firm grip on world sprint as compatriot Usain Bolt won the men’s version on Sunday in another keenly contested race.

Having shown much promise particularly in the semi-final where she effortlessly ran a time of 10.89secs, many had thought Okagbare will write her name in the history books to become the first Nigerian, man or woman to win a medal in 100m.

Despite the disappointment, Okagbare will pride herself as Nigeria’s fastest woman in the history of the world championships as her time of 10.89secs is faster than the 10.97 seconds Mary Onyali ran in the first round at the 4th IAAF Worlds in Stuttgart, Germany in 1993.

With the 100m now away from the grips of Okagbare, she will hope for consolation in the 200m as well as the 4x100m events.
