The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba has described allowance earned by some country’s legislators to read newspapers daily, as unacceptable.
Wabba noted with disappointment that a senator earns N46, 000 as their daily newspaper allowance.
Speaking with journalists, Wabba averred that the 46,000 newspaper allowance earned by some politicians is equal to some citizens’ monthly allowance.
He voiced his conviction thus: “If you are collecting N46, 000 as newspapers allowance daily and somebody is working almost every day but collecting N18, 000 for 30 days, I think it is unacceptable.”
“We want change in this country and everybody must conform to the change; the National Assembly must be ready to make sacrifices.
“The executive, which is one arm of government, has made sacrifice of 50 per cent of its salary, the NASS should not be an exception, they should cut their jumbo pay.
“If they are not ready to do it through due process and slash their jumbo pay, then Nigerians will force them, we will approach them by force to do it.”
Meanwhile, the legislators are said to have received N93 million as recess allowance despite only sitting for 14 days since their inauguration on June 9.
The NLC boss further opined that the salaries and allowances of the lawmakers should correspond with the present economic reality in the country.
