
In its preparation towards ensuring safety, the Oyo State sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has convicted over 100 road traffic offenders in the last two weeks.
Disclosing this at the weekend, in Ibadan, at Egbeda unit, Mr Yusuff Salami, disclosed that enforcement of traffic rules and regulations was to curb the occurrence of road traffic.
He said the same special operation was carried out on August 18 on Ibadan-Ilesa expressway, adding that the weekend operation was the continuation of that to prepare the minds of people towards 2015 ‘ember months.’
“It is aimed at making sure they put their vehicles in order and obey all traffic rules and regulations, especially as we are still in the raining season,” he added.
“What we have today is intra-command patrol. We pulled vehicles from unit commands in the state to come together to work along the road,” Mr Salami said, stating further that a similar exercise was carried at Ogbomoso, on August 20, where over 26 offenders were arrested.
He assured that the operation would continue into the ‘ember’ months and would be sustained thereafter.
He also said the sector command would start the enforcement of the installation of speed limiter in vehicles on September 1, 2015, stressing that the enlightenment aspect was being intensified to create further awareness.
Meanwhile, two people died while 11 people were injured on Ibadan-Ife expressway in the South-West part of Nigeria, after a Lagos-bound bus and a truck collided at about 7.00p.m during the week.
Sunday Tribune learnt that those involved in the accident were 20 males and 14 females, totaling 34, out of which 21 escaped unhurt.
The dead include a male and a female while the injured were six males and five females.
According to Mr Salami, the accident involving a Toyota Coaster bus with registration number DB 311 ABC and a Kovo truck with registration number EGB 38 XA occurred at kilometer 17, Osegere community along Ibadan-Ife expressway.
The Coaster bus was said to have been coming from Abuja while the truck operated within Ibadan axis.
The Sector Commander told the Nigerian Tribune that the information gathered indicated that the bus driver was on top speed and lost control at a point, running into the truck which was facing the same direction.
FRSC officials from Egbeda unit who were notified by members of the public reportedly rushed to the scene to rescue the injured and evacuate the corpses from the crushed vehicles.
He said that the injured victims were rushed to ASVON Hospital, Gbagi Ibadan from where they were referred to the University College Hospital, Ibadan for medical attention, adding that the corpses of the victims were deposited in the mortuary at the State Hospital, Yemetu-Adeoyo, Ibadan.
Mr Salami attributed the accident to speed violation and dangerous-driving, saying that it was the reason the FRSC introduced speed limiter to control over-speeding.
