The Nigeria Union of Teacher has evaded the yearly parade for the celebration of the World’s Teachers’ Day on the note that it is appalling to do so seeing the current state of Education in Nigeria.

The NUT National President, Comrade Michael Alogba Olukoya, who deliberated on the matter at a news conference to mark the 2013 World Teachers’ Day coming up on Saturday, said Nigeria teachers have decided to mark this year’s celebration on a very low-key to draw the attention of the Federal Government as well as all Nigerians to the plight of Nigerian teachers.

He said Nigerian teachers were not happy with the present situation of things in the education sector, adding that nothing warranted elaborate celebration of the day.

He revealed that the Nigeria teachers have also vowed to resist every attempt by the National Assembly to put primary school education under the care of local government in the proposed local government autonomy because they lack the capacity to handle it.

Olukoya also said that Nigerian teachers were “mourning” because of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which has put the children of the poor out of school for more than three months now.

He however recalled that before the creation of the State/Local Government Joint Account, Nigerian teachers suffered a great deal under the local government councils, stressing that teachers were owed salaries for several months.
