Barely 24 hours to the conduct of the Delta Central senatorial district by-election, CEOAFRICA news gathered that two chieftains of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), Thursday formally relinquished their membership of the party and pitched their tent with the PDP.
The defected DPP members are Hon. Austine Ogbaburhon, who represents Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency at the House of Reps and Hon. Keston Okoro, who is the member representing Udu LGA at the state House of Assembly.
Ogbaburhon, Okoro and their supporters made good their decision to join the PDP at a brief but impressive ceremony at Orhuworhun in Udu LGA, which was attended by the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, his deputy, Prof. Amos Utuama and the PDP’s standard bearer in tomorrow’s by-election, Chief Emmanuel Aguariavwodo.
The state Chairman of the PDP, Chief Peter Nwaoboshi, who welcomed the defected members, insisted that they be reinstated to the former positions in the party without delay. The governor, who could not hide his excitement at the major boost to the fortunes of the PDP, particularly in Udu area, said the by-election should not be a do-or-die affair.
In his remarks, Ogbaburon said they were back in the PDP fold for good and would work earnestly towards the victory of the party not only in tomorrow’s election but in all future elections. “We, who were in the DPP and all other small parties have today crossed over to the PDP; we are tired of being in the opposition, we see that President Jonathan is listening to us the Urhobo people and we have better chances with a PDP senator in Abuja. We, members of PDP are going to win by a wide margin,” he said.
