First Tanzanian President, Late Julius Nyerere
President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania has declared April 13 every year Nyerere Day in honour of the Tanzania’s first president and founding father Julius Nyerere.
CEOAFRICA.com gathered that the president made this declaration during a ceremony commemorating the 14th anniversary of Nyerere’s death.
“Mwalimu (Nyerere) was a great leader. He deserves our honour. Therefore, I declare April 13th, the date when Mwalimu Nyerere was born, Nyerere Day.”
Kikwete said the quest for “peace, harmony and tranquility” should be held dearly in honour of Nyerere, and the ongoing constitutional review process should strive to help the nation to remain united.
Pius Msekwa, former speaker of the National Assembly, said Tanzanians need to embrace Nyerere’s philosophy of fighting corruption.
“If someone gets rich and has no visible business, Nyerere will brand that person corrupt. You had to prove that you own a business to get rich and that you are paying taxes. Therefore, this philosophy of Mwalimu Nyerere is still valid to date,” he said
