The dissolution of exco affects Oyo Prisoners' fate

The dissolution of the Oyo State executive council has affected the release of some indigenes from the state serving life jail term in Nigerian prisons.

It was gathered in Ibadan on Thursday the committee saddled with responsibility of reviewing the situation of the prisoners had met one month ago.

 

It was gathered the Prerogative Board of Mercy committee had recommended that some of the prisoners whose death penalty were commuted to life sentence on 2008 and 2009 had been recommended for release.

 

Also those on death penalty had their sentence commuted to life.

Those prisoners who have death sentence commuted to life in 2009 by former governor Adebayo Alao-Akala were Lukmon Ajibola, Morufu Yusufu, Adepetu Moshood, Oladipupo Yinka Adedeji and Innocent Nwacha.

Those whose death sentence to life in 2008 were Abass Owonikoko and Akeem Olaniyi.The prisoners were presently serving their life sentences at Maximum Prison,Abeokuta and Agodi prisons.

 

However since the recommendations were made by the committee, it was on table of the state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General.A source in the Ministry of Justice said the absence of the commissioner had prevented the presentation of the committee's recommendation to the governor.

 

He said that nothing could be done on the committee's recommendations until another when another commissioner is appointed.

The state governor recently assured that a new executive would be constituted before the end of October.
